it you were to ask me wad's the most representative of UM's academic life thus far, i would accredit it none other than to its practicals. the once-a-myth GOLD STANDARD technique of measuring the intraocular pressure, Goldmann cotnact tonometry is now as real as a stinging sensation on our cornea after the initial instillation of Alcaine 0.5%. here's a very generous demonstration by Dr yong of TTSH of using the not-so-gold astandard of perkins tonometry, which is the portable version of the Goldmann.
well trust me... i was taking the risk to take this shot for all you optometry-wannabes or wannanotbes. that's why i was tremendously relieved when miss anna yeo not only allowed me to take the video, but even asked me to send it to her. which reminds me now of course! haha!
as you can see, after the instillation of a local anaestetic (LA) which is not shown here, a cone-like probe which is flatted at its apex is being pressed onto the cornea. yes. PRESSED. below are some pics of our actual prac.
this one's showing the process of peiyik trying out on me, well. dun doubt. i took this pic myself while my cornea was on its stake.
this is Dr yong performing on sabrina. nice right? (i mean the technique...)
though ms ng wasn't around this week to chat with me on blogging ethics, mr chris ng and i expounded on the essence of JIU YANG SHEN GONG. his level 8 was indeed formidable. having mastered only up till the 7th level, i din know you could better contrast the mires by adjusting the background illumination of the slitlamp.
the desired mires for each reading. shot is taken from computer screen while the image is being freezed from the GAT.
the undesired effect of the contact tonometry (with courtesy of peiyik's cornea)
of course... the these horrific images were taken last week. this week... erm, we know better by having not to check our cornea health after the prac:) so... no images of damaged cornea this week!
